Liberty Media yesterday bought a $185 million stake in OpenTV, giving John Malone's company voting control of the ITV software provider. OpenTV says its software is used in 24 million set-tops worldwide.
Concurrent and nCube have struck deals to use new ad-insertion software by Eversteam in their VOD servers, a report says. The technology, called S4 Campaign Director, enables advertisers to slip targeted spots into VOD programs.
John Malone has said he intends to ask the FTC to convert Liberty Media's 4% stake in AOL Time Warner to full-voting shares. Malone's friendship with Ted Turner, who owns 3.8% of the conglomerate's stock, leads some to think they might work together for a common goal. Malone denies it. In 1996, the FTC limited Liberty predecessor TCI's stake in the merger of Turner Broadcasting Systems and Time Warner because of potential anticompetitive effects.
