TBS and TNT have acquired the rights to four upcoming theatricals from New Line and Picturehouse, including "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "17 Again," which stars "High School Musical" heartthrob Zac Efron. Separately, the movie studios inked an 11-film deal with the Sundance Channel that includes "La Vie en Rose."
Despite not having been advertised since 2000, TiVo has racked up around 700,000 subscribers, most of whom revere the device with a zeal almost cult-like. TiVo users say the PVR has changed the way they live, the way they watch TV and their approach to culture; moreover, it has given rise to a new verb: "to TiVo" a program, or to record a program for later viewing.
In its two decades on the air, Disney Channel has gone from a little recognized niche network to a children's TV powerhouse. Gary Marsh, EVP original programming and production, says the show "Lizzie McGuire" catapulted Disney into the spotlight, but he also says that executives Anne Sweeney and Rich Ross have played major roles in developing a winning strategy for the network.
