A dozen Superfresh groceries in the Baltimore area are being sold as its owner, A&P, works through bankruptcy. The remaining 13 regional stores will close in July, after A&P failed to find a buyer. The company expects to raise more than $40 million from the sale.
Fresh Brands, owner of Piggly Wiggly and Dick's Supermarkets, is the likely buyer of 23 Milwaukee-area Kohl's grocery stores. Analysts predict that if the deal were to go through, it would probably happen soon; the stores would remain closed for as short a period of time as possible before reopening under new management.
Birds Eye Foods plans to sell its Veg-All canned vegetables unit to Allen Canning. The deal, which is expected to close in June, won't affect farmers in the Rochester, N.Y., area who supply vegetables to Birds Eye, according to the company.
The USDA has given no timeline for lifting its ban on imported Canadian beef products. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman is carefully examining the safety of beef from Canada, following the discovery a month ago of a BSE-infected cow.
