New research by the Brookings Institution about American children's study habits debunks the belief that students are overloaded with homework. Studies have found that the average daily time spent on homework rose from 16 minutes in 1981 to just over 19 minutes in 1997, with only 34% of college freshmen reporting they had spent more than an hour each day during the school week on homework when they were seniors.
