The FDA has given its approval for Genentech's Avastin for treating colon cancer, effective by denying blood to tumors associated with the disease, making it the first approved drug that works by starving the cancer. The approval was tied to Avastin being used along with chemotherapy as a major treatment for colon cancer in cases in which the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
