Researchers looking at the estrogen-only part of the Women's Health Initiative found estrogen could help reduce menopausal symptoms for women who underwent a hysterectomy, but it was not helpful in the prevention of heart disease and other chronic conditions. In other areas, estrogen reduced the risk of fractures but had an increased risk of stroke, which was the reason the large study of postmenopausal women was halted early.
