Milk producers are asking the USDA to reclassify milk sold to yogurt,
cheese, sports drink and other manufacturers, a change that would
modernize definitions originally established 70 years ago and change a regulated pricing structure the producers say currently penalizes farmers.
Recent introductions of low-carbohydrate drinks and drinkable yogurts
have stimulated this discussion, and opponents to the change include the
president of General Mills' Yoplait division, Robert Waldron, who said
"Milk is not a drinkable food product."
