A spokesman for Ahold USA-owned Giant Food Stores said the company is set to open a 91,000-square-foot "concept" store featuring "some advances in technology and additional services that have not been seen before in a Giant store." The Camp Hill, Pa., store, scheduled to open in October, will feature a culinary school, a specialty cheese shop and on-site nutritionists, according to earlier reports.
Sara Lee-owned Jimmy Dean's new ad campaign features "The Sun" with the tagline "Happy Breakfast." The initiative will include TV spots on top-rated morning TV programs, national and regional radio ads, in-store promotions, and print ads in USA TODAY.
Janel Haugarth, the newly installed president of Supervalu Inc.'s distribution unit, will oversee the rollout of new robotic technology that could trim labor costs and help the company and its independent retailers compete against large discount chains. One industry consultant calls her a "rising star," adding she's well-positioned to move up Supervalu's chain of command.
Featuring fuel stations, a convenience store and 86,000 square feet of
products and services that include dry cleaning and a child care center, Giant Eagle is opening a new concept store in the burgeoning northern
suburbs of Pittsburgh. A state-controlled wine and spirits shop is also
within the store.
The Royal Ahold-owned chain said it is selling or closing all its manufacturing operations, including dairy, ice cream and ice cube plants, and shuttering some warehouses in an effort to focus on store revitalization. "We are getting out of the manufacturing business and leaving it to the experts," said Giant Food spokesman Barry F. Sher.
