Fresh Market was forced to close a store in Mandeville, La., just days after its opening, but spokespeople say structural damage from Hurricane Katrina was minimal and the store will reopen in the future. Grocery marketing consultant Burt Flickinger thinks the 50-store competitor to Whole Foods has an opportunity to increase its sales in southern markets if the company is able to "re-evaluate the format, things like lighting, departmental layout, the variety and assortment."
Janel Haugarth, the newly installed president of Supervalu Inc.'s distribution unit, will oversee the rollout of new robotic technology that could trim labor costs and help the company and its independent retailers compete against large discount chains. One industry consultant calls her a "rising star," adding she's well-positioned to move up Supervalu's chain of command.
Winemakers such as Brown-Forman are working to expand the already burgeoning wine market by making and marketing more "accessible" labels that appeal to younger, hipper drinkers. Virgin Group's Richard Branson teamed with Brown-Forman to introduce Virgin Vines, "an engaging, edgy, vibrant, fun product," Branson says.
Sara Lee-owned Jimmy Dean's new ad campaign features "The Sun" with the tagline "Happy Breakfast." The initiative will include TV spots on top-rated morning TV programs, national and regional radio ads, in-store promotions, and print ads in USA TODAY.

products and services that include dry cleaning and a child care center, Giant Eagle is opening a new concept store in the burgeoning northern
suburbs of Pittsburgh. A state-controlled wine and spirits shop is also
within the store.
