7-Eleven soon plans to offer healthier foods with its Pick Smart line, which includes fresh sandwiches and packaged baked goods with lower calorie and fat content. Items that qualify cannot have more than 10 grams of fat and 420 calories and will be branded with the Pick Smart logo.
Pepsico's Quaker Oats has recently begun selling a new breakfast food called Quaker Breakfast Cookies that target "people who typically reach for a 'sweet' snack before lunch, but don't want to compromise on nutrition," according to the company. The cookies, available in oatmeal raisin and apple cinnamon varieties, are made with grain Quaker Oats and provide 5 grams of dietary fiber.
Mass Market Retailers has named Costco Wholesale Corp. its Mass Market Retailer of the Year. MMR says Costco has achieved its dominant position through sales that reached $51.9 billion through August, its 25 million members -- who brought in $1 billion in fees -- and its retail mix that caters to individuals and small businesses.
Wal-Mart Stores' planned introduction of up to 180 Supercenters in Canada within five to seven years could shake up the food retail market there, but it may find the sector more difficult to penetrate than the general merchandise sector, analysts say. Wal-Mart will compete with Canadian chains Loblaw Companies Ltd., Sobeys Inc. and Metro Inc.
