Lionsgate may be in the advanced stages of reaching a deal to acquire Starz after the company stated in a regulatory filing this year that it formally planned to explore a deal. Both companies declined to comment on the deal, which analysts say could value Starz at $30 per share.
The Smithsonian Networks, a joint venture between Showtime and the Smithsonian Institution, is upsetting some filmmakers, historians and researchers who fear they will lose access to the Smithsonian's resources. The first offering from the joint venture, a VOD cable channel, is due in December.
The new SportsNet New York channel, owned by Time Warner, Comcast and the New York Mets baseball team, debuts tonight. And it looks as if Cablevision Systems subscribers may get a chance to see the channel, too.
