Tech companies are pushing into the telecom space as the lines between industries continue to blur. Microsoft has made the most recent move with the launch of software designed for enterprise communications.
The FCC ruled unanimously to require that VoIP providers contribute fees to the Universal Service Fund. The ruling only affects VoIP services that interconnect with the public switched telephone network.
The FCC may fine AT&T up to $500 million for failing to pay telecom fees on its popular prepaid calling cards. Specifically, the company hasn't paid fees for connecting intrastate calls, nor has it paid into the universal service fund.
