In an effort to educate their colleagues about the benefits and uses of RFID, several senators have joined forces to create the U.S. Senate RFID Caucus. The U.S. State Department's legislation mandating that all U.S. passports must contain RFID chips by the end of 2006 represented a major victory for the technology's acceptance.
Shares of Coca-Cola Co., Pepsico and Anheuser-Busch Cos. all are up roughly 5% this year, while Hansen Natural Corp., which makes the popular Monster Energy drink, is up 133% percent for the second year in a row. "The companies are picking up their primary volume growth from non-carbonated beverages," said one analyst.
Carrefour expects to open a third mega-store along the old Silk Road in China, where it already has two outlets. Overall, the company operates nearly 80 stores in China, reaching sales of $2.2 billion in 2005.
