In an effort to educate their colleagues about the benefits and uses of RFID, several senators have joined forces to create the U.S. Senate RFID Caucus. The U.S. State Department's legislation mandating that all U.S. passports must contain RFID chips by the end of 2006 represented a major victory for the technology's acceptance.
One of Unilever's ice cream makers, Ben & Jerry's Homemade, separated itself from the company's effort to get U.K. clearance for a biotech ice cream based on a synthetic protein. A Ben & Jerry's spokesperson said the company would not "include anything like that" in its products.
Shares of Coca-Cola Co., Pepsico and Anheuser-Busch Cos. all are up roughly 5% this year, while Hansen Natural Corp., which makes the popular Monster Energy drink, is up 133% percent for the second year in a row. "The companies are picking up their primary volume growth from non-carbonated beverages," said one analyst.
