While shares of Yahoo! dropped on news of the company's reorganization, analysts spoke highly of the decision to promote CFO Susan Decker to take charge of advertising. Yahoo! still claims the largest audience of any Web portal, but a consensus is building that the company lacks a coherent identity and mission.
The online ad segment is poised to surpass radio by 2008, according to research firm eMarketer. Online is projected to grow from its roughly 5.8% share of the $281 billion-plus ad pie to 8.1% by 2008, vs. radio's slice, which reportedly stands at 6.9%, and is diminishing.
While paper shredders and label makers may seem like odd holiday gift choices, a new ad campaign by retailer Staples is positioning the retailer as a place to find "unexpected gifts." In addition to office products, the retail chain is competing with consumer electronics stores with deals on HDTVs, digital cameras and photo printers.
