While marriage advocates in states such as Rhode Island and Washington are adopting a strategy that it's better to gain equivalent rights, even if such unions aren't called marriages, other advocates caution against setting the bar too low for equality. "What I am against is us going into the conversation bargaining against ourselves," said Evan Wolfson, head of the national group, Freedom to Marry. "You don't even get half a loaf by asking for half a loaf."
