Cable boxes are transitioning from passive devices to ones that will learn customers' preferences. New set-top boxes from companies such as Digeo will be smart devices that are capable of fetching local news and weather or moving a show from one TV to another.
CEA has issued two sets of standards governing DTVs, digital-television accessories, DVRs and set-top boxes. The standards, "DTV Remodulator Specification With Enhanced OSD Capability" and "Recommended Practice for DTV Receiver 'Monitor' Mode Capability," were issued by CEA's Digital Interface Subcommittee.
The accessory market for consumer electronics should continue to exceed the growth rate of the larger electronics industry because of changes in consumer behavior and a host of new product introductions, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. "The MP3 player is the perfect example of a new product that fueled an explosion of attachment products," CEA's market research senior director, Tim Herbert, said.
