Alcatel-Lucent has landed a contract from Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom to supply Ethernet/MPLS solutions for a fiber-optical network. Chunghwa Telecom's "Optical Era Project" is a $180 million investment to bring fiber-optic connections to 2.4 million subscribers by the close of 2010.
China Telecom subsidiary Shanghai Telecom has tapped Alcatel Shanghai Bell to upgrade the operator's IP network. Alcatel-Lucent formed the Shanghai Telecom joint venture with a group of Chinese shareholders.
Wireless carrier SK Telecom and fixed-line operator KT on Friday plan to launch a commercial wireless broadband service based on WiBro technology, South Korea's homegrown version of WiMax. The service will offer connection speeds between 1 Mbps and 3 Mbps and will first be rolled out in Seoul.
