Samsung Electronics has received a global certification for its WiMAX-enabling technology, including base stations, PC card-type terminal and USB modem. It's the first time the Mobile WiMAX Forum gave its Certified Seal of Approval for a mobile WiMAX product, according to the company. WiMAX backers hope the certification will inject some energy into the global market for mobile WiMAX after the ITU's approval of standards in October.
China Telecom subsidiary Shanghai Telecom has tapped Alcatel Shanghai Bell to upgrade the operator's IP network. Alcatel-Lucent formed the Shanghai Telecom joint venture with a group of Chinese shareholders.
Wireless carrier SK Telecom and fixed-line operator KT on Friday plan to launch a commercial wireless broadband service based on WiBro technology, South Korea's homegrown version of WiMax. The service will offer connection speeds between 1 Mbps and 3 Mbps and will first be rolled out in Seoul.
