A new study suggests that a home-based program of self-care strategies -- such as keeping a list of trigger foods, a diary of symptoms and managing stress -- can help IBS patients who do not respond to drugs or dietary changes and cannot attend therapist-led behavior programs. U.S. researchers compared a four-week self-administered program to a 10-week therapist-driven program and found them equally effective at relieving abdominal pain and bowel symptoms.
