Alvin, the last of the tiny submersibles designed to explore nearly three miles beneath the ocean's surface, is being retired after more than 40 years. Its $50 million replacement, now under construction in Wisconsin, will dive up to four miles, opening 99% of the ocean floor to exploration. Although work continues at Ladish Forging outside Milwaukee, budget overruns have delayed the project, with full completion now scheduled for 2015.
