U.S. researchers recommend the use of FDG-PET over plain-film radiography as the imaging modality to complement MRI for diagnosing acute osteomyelitis in diabetic patients. In a study of 101 patients, FDG-PET correctly identified acute osteomyelitis in 18 of 23 patients and correctly excluded the disease in 70 of 75 patients, exhibiting a sensitivity of 78% and a specificity of 93%.
