Hospitals are becoming more aware of the physical and emotional effects of work-related stress on their nursing staff and are finding new ways to relieve "compassion fatigue." Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in suburban Chicago has created a nurse's retreat in a break room to help nurses relax and reduce stress levels, and Adventist Hospitals in Bolingbrook and Glendale Heights brought in a trainer who encouraged nurses to incorporate small exercises, stretching and breathing into their shifts.
