Members of the U.S. Green Building Council have approved an upgraded certification program for commercial buildings. The revised standards, which will take effect in 2009, boost the threshold for improving energy efficiency and cutting carbon emissions. The system will keep its four tiers of recognition, which include basic certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, as well as three ascending levels: LEED-Silver, LEED-Gold and LEED Platinum.
