Whether or not the Mormon Church opts to build on its successful opposition of California's Proposition 8 by backing future anti-gay-rights measures, the church's actions have renewed old questions about the use of its political power and whether it would seek to exert control over a Mormon candidate for higher office, according to writer Stephen Stromberg. "One thing is clear: If the church decides to continue flexing its political muscle, it cannot expect to escape criticism, some of it pretty harsh," Stromberg writes.
