Consumers are finding new touch-screen handsets to be an especially fertile ground for downloading useful applications -- many of them free -- as Apple's App Store has attracted competition from Google's Android platform and Research in Motion's BlackBerry. "Shazam," which can provide radio listeners the name of the song they're hearing, and "GoodGuide," which gives shoppers access to information from a database of 60,000 household and personal-use products, are just two examples.
