The WL Gore materials company has thrived for 50 years, but the concept of management never took hold. "We don't like the 'manager' word," says CEO Terri Kelly. "We get very angry when people call [the staff] employees." She was shocked when her colleagues at Gore essentially elected her chief executive, and even she can't tell the 8,600 "associates" what to do. "It's not a title where you've got assumed authority or control, you really have to earn that every day," she says.
