In the early days of the World Wide Web, portals such as Yahoo! offered a way to make sense of the flood of content. Those sites built on that success by rolling out communications tools such as e-mail and IM. But according to Marketspace founder and chairman Jeffrey F. Rayport, social networks are taking on that content-plus-communication role in a way that offers users more interaction and flexibility.
