CIOs who have survived and learned from their failures are better equipped to handle crises that might defeat the resolve and skills of lesser-experienced executives, experts said. John Halamka, CIO at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, views problems as system weaknesses rather than staff incompetence, fostering a transparent environment that encourages employees to help in finding solutions. Halamka cited a 2002 network outage that led the hospital to establish a procedure for downtime, as well as invest in network upgrades and redundant-data centers.
