Ricky Gervais' iconic turn on the British version of "The Office" made him synonymous with terrible management, writes Emma Jacobs, but the real-life Gervais is a savvy operator who built a multimedia empire by insisting on maintaining control of his projects. "I've never taken a handcuffs deal because I've never wanted to be beholden to anybody. I can go to any channel at any time and that keeps everyone on their toes" Gervais says.
