A new study found 8% of 2,000 people with irritable bowel syndrome said they would accept a 1 in 100 chance of dying if it meant they could take a medication that completely relieved their symptoms. The survey results by the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders indicated 1 in 5 people were taking a narcotic pain medication and 8 in 10 had constant or frequent abdominal pain. Survey participants said the main factors making IBS such a severe problem included pain, bowel difficulties, bloating and diet limitations.
