Records show that blood transfusion has become the second-highest cause of HIV infection, following sexual intercourse, in the Indian city of Ahmedabad. In the span of 18 months, 316 children younger than 14 were infected with HIV through blood transfusions. To address the problem, health officials are looking to implement more effective blood-screening measures and assigning a specific group of trusted blood donors to thalassemic children.
