Researchers said an educational program for staff that covered hand hygiene, catheter care standards and intravenous drug preparation helped reduce rates of catheter-related bloodstream infections in ICUs. Study data showed the rate of 3.9 CRBSIs per 1,000 catheter days before the study dropped to 1.1 during the intervention phase. While hand hygiene compliance improved slightly from 59% to 65% during the study, the rate of correct performance of hand hygiene improved from 22.5% to 42.6%.
