Drawing the line between being a good boss and being overly familiar can be difficult, especially for women who are naturally empathetic managers, writes Chaniga Vorasarun. Experts say failing to maintain necessary boundaries can hurt an employee's career, a manager's reputation and the company's profits. "Often everyone can see that someone is not performing well, but if that person is protected, it can erode morale across the department," says leadership psychologist Susan Battley.
