Swedish researchers said a study of 1,000 very premature babies given aggressive care showed 55% survived to their first birthday. The data showed survival increased significantly with each added week of gestation; fewer than 10% of babies born alive at 22 weeks survived compared with 67% at 24 weeks and 85% at 26 weeks. The researchers suggested survival data would help physicians and parents make decisions about giving aggressive care to the earliest preemies.
