Chinese scientists found that a class of nanoparticles, polyamidoamine dendrimers, can injure the lungs by activating a process known as autophagic cell death. To block the effect of PAMAMs, mice were injected with a drug inhibitor. "The idea is that, to increase the safety of nanomedicine, compounds could be developed that could either be incorporated into the nano product to protect against lung damage, or patients could be given pills to counteract the effects," the lead researcher said.
