Doctors in India were able to cure an 8-year-old thalassemia patient by transplanting perfectly matched cord blood and bone marrow stem cells from her 1-year-old brother. While bone marrow stem cell transplantation has been considered the gold standard treatment for the disease for more than 30 years, doctors slowly are considering cord-blood stem cell transplantation as a viable option.
