Irritable bowel syndrome -- which is characterized by chronic, recurrent abdominal pain that can be relieved after a bowel movement -- may be caused by an imbalance in serotonin, which functions as a neurotransmitter in nerve systems that regulate bowel function. Dietary triggers, gut bacteria, and stress and anxiety also may contribute to IBS symptoms. Treatment options include dietary and lifestyle changes and prescription drugs.
