U.K. consumers spent 4% more on organic food and beverages last year, bucking the trend of falling prices for conventional foods, according to a report from the U.K.'s Soil Association. Discount grocers ALDI and Lidl boosted their organic food offerings, as did online grocer Ocado, which now offers 2,654 organic lines.
Tesco operates four stores that fulfill only online grocery orders and plans to open two more in the next two years. The supermarket giant, whose online operation competes with Web-only grocer Ocado, plans to eventually operate "tens but not hundreds" of such facilities to serve consumers in densely populated urban areas, Director of Internet Retailing Ken Towle said.
Online grocer Ocado is launching a "virtual shop window" at a shopping center in London. Consumers with an Apple iPhone or a Google Android smartphone can scan physical products to fill an online basket. Ocado might roll out more windows around the U.K. if the first one is successful. "We'll be looking at options around continuing this 'virtual window shopping' approach," said Jason Gissing, co-founder of Ocado.
Carrefour executives are believed to have visited the Hertfordshire, England, warehouse of online grocer Ocado as the two companies discuss a possible partnership. Carrefour would use Ocado's software designed for online grocery deliveries, if the deal is made.
