The House passed a bill last month that would extend unemployment benefits by 13 weeks for those in high-unemployment states, but the Senate is still debating the issue, and several proposals are under consideration; no vote has been scheduled. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., has proposed legislation that would increase benefits nationwide by four weeks, and by 17 weeks for those in states with jobless rates of 8.5% or more. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., is expected to propose a bill that would increase benefits by 17 weeks nationwide.
