A dual-language program for gifted elementary-school students in Brownsville, Texas, has shrunk from a high of six schools to just three this year. The program allows for gifted students who speak either language to be taught together -- using English and Spanish on alternate days -- with the goal that they be academically proficient in both languages by fifth grade. Some teachers and principals say the amount of work and resources needed to prepare dual-language lessons may have caused support for the program to fade.
