Designers showed off their latest collections in Paris this week, and retail buyers approved the cropped jackets, slim pants, tunics, oversize shirts and lower heels from Balenciaga, Givenchy, Saint Laurent and Dries Van Noten. “Paris presented one of the most highly anticipated seasons in years,” said Colleen Sherin, senior fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Macy's will launch the Kenneth Cole Reaction line, an exclusive men's sportswear label, at 150 stores and online in September. The casual collection of denim pieces and graphic T-shirts will join the merchant's lineup of exclusives, including women's labels from Rachel Roy and Ellen Tracy.
The National Retail Federation is forecasting that retail sales will be down 1% compared with last year. That would be the second straight decline. "Retailers' focus on the holiday season has been razor-sharp, with companies cutting back as much as possible on operating costs in order to pass along aggressive savings and promotions to customers," NRF's Tracy Mullin said.
Meijer has added Grocery Express service to locations in St. Charles and Aurora, Ill. For $6.95, customers can shop online, then schedule a time to pick up the items in a designated space at the supermarket parking lot.
Some retailers are getting stronger amid the recession or are well-positioned to improve during a recovery. Amazon, Aaron's, GameStop, Aeropostale, Buckle, Dollar Tree, O'Reilly Automotive, Priceline, Staples and Ulta Salon all make the list.
