A Canadian study involving 3,842 stable patients undergoing cardiac surgery found that the patients given blood transfusions had significantly higher rates of morbidity and mortality than those who were not administered with blood products. Patients also showed worse results the later they were given the transfusions, the study said. The study highlights the need for blood conservation techniques and guidelines covering the administration of blood products to surgery patients who are not at risk of bleeding to death, a cardiac expert said.
