The U.S. government's bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler have had the effect of punishing Ford Motor for its success, according to this blog post. Almost a third of U.S. demand for cars would have been pursued by stronger manufacturers, including Ford, had the government let GM and Chrysler go out of business.
