Beginning basic foreign language instruction as early as kindergarten is more developmentally appropriate than waiting until a student is in fifth grade, argues Nicole Sherf, an associate language professor at Salem State College and president of the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association. Integrating foreign languages into the K-12 curriculum by introducing academic concepts in a student's native language as well as a foreign language would provide students with interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives for learning, Sherf writes in this opinion article.
