School officials in Virginia say they are working to improve their assessments for gifted-education programs to ensure that minority students are better represented in the programs. Earlier identification and tracking of students who may be gifted as well as outreach programs to make parents aware of gifted-education opportunities are among the strategies being employed by one district. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine last week ordered an investigation into disparities in gifted-education programs.
