Chemtura, Albemarle and ICL Industrial Products reached an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency to voluntarily phase out production of the flame-retardant chemical decabromodiphenyl ether within three years. The deal would stop the production, importation and use of the chemical in consumer products by December 2012, while a full ban would be implemented a year after. Albemarle described deca as safe but said the company had developed a "recyclable and an eco-friendly alternative."
