The popularity of integrated GPS services on smartphones has forced makers of stand-alone satellite navigation devices to scramble to transform their products to compete with the wireless applications, according to industry analysts. "You have to redefine the category somewhat, like what Apple did with the iPod Touch. That turned it from something that was just a media player into something that accessed the Web," The NPD Group analyst Ross Rubin said.
