Alexa Posny, who was confirmed as assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services in October, says she chose a career in special education after watching a childhood friend with Down syndrome be educated separately from his peers. In this interview with Education Week, she says she will draw on her years of experience in Kansas -- where she rose to be education commissioner -- "to improve alignment between special education, rehabilitative services, Secretary Duncan's reform priorities and other education and workforce policy."
