Five members of the U.S. Marine Corps' special forces are the first to graduate from an advanced linguist course designed to prepare them to converse, negotiate and give security briefings in languages with strategic dialects such as sub-Saharan French and Indonesian. The program features nine months of language immersion designed to teach grammar and syntax through conversation rather than textbooks. A 52-week course this summer will focus on Dari, Pashtu and Urdu.
