Many schools with access to technology are taking advantage of digital tools to help promote and enhance foreign language instruction. An initiative begun in 1988 to foster U.S.-Soviet relations is being used by educators to allow for collaborative projects among students across the globe, while other Web-based tools such as ePals help students network among classrooms in 200 countries. The initiatives are considered positive during a time when funding cuts and teacher shortages have led to dwindling support for school foreign language programs.
