A Duke University study found patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease who drank a lot of fructose-sweetened beverages, including those with high-fructose corn syrup, were more likely to have hepatic scarring that can progress to cirrhosis or liver cancer. Researchers said older patients who regularly drank fructose beverages showed more signs of liver inflammation and the heavy fructose drinkers also had lower levels of HDL cholesterol.
