After a car crash damaged his spinal cord and left him a quadriplegic, Steve Kitchin wanted desperately to drive again, but a modified minivan was his chief option, and "I didn't want to be the soccer-mom type," he recalls. Along with some friends, he modified a GMC pickup to accommodate his wheelchair, then discovered others were interested in a similar vehicle. With help from a car dealer, Kitchin established a factory that employs 17 workers in northeastern Indiana, and he says demand for his $25,000 modification could eventually push his payroll up to 200.
